About the Exam

Civil Services Examination

This is the most important Exam that UPSC conducts besides various other exams viz. Indian Forest Service Entrance Examination, Indian Engineering Services Examination etc. The exam is an umbrella test for recruiting into various All India Services and Group 'A' of Government of India. The exam not only tests the knowledge but also the depth in analytical skills of the candidate. Following are the services which are covered under the purview of this exam

* Indian Ordnance Factories Service (Assistant Works Manager, non-technical)

* Indian Postal Service

* Indian Civil Accounts Service

* Indian Railway Traffic Service

* Indian Railway Accounts Service

* Indian Railway Personnel Service

* Posts of Assistant Security Officer in Railway Protection Force (RPF)

* Indian Defence Estates Service

* Indian Information Service (Junior Grade)

Group - B

* Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service (Section Officer's Grade)

* The Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli Civil Service

* The Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli Police Service

Eligibility Conditions

 Age limits :

Prescribed age-limits are 21-30 years as on 1st August, 2009 for all the services/posts  (Upper age limit relaxable for SCs/Sts by 5 years, OBCs and certain other categories as specified in the notification).

 Educational Qualifications :

Degree of a recognised University or equivalent. (Para 3(iii) of Notice).

No. of permissible attempts :

Four for General Category candidates (Seven attempts for OBCs and P.H. Candidates belonging to General Category and no limit for SCs/STs (Para 3 (iv) of Notice).

Fee :

Rs. 50/- (Rupees fifty only) (No fee for SCs/STs/Physically disabled only).
