Sociology certainly looks like an easier option, but the study material available for Public Administration is far more superior and is available more easily. Take sociology only if you have done thorough study of sociology either in your graduation or out of interest. But you need very sound conceptual understanding for both. One more thing about Pub Ad is that the number of aspirants choosing it for Prelims is far more than sociology, so you actually stand a better chance in Pub Ad. But yes it is more difficult than Sociology, so make you pick.

The most important thing for prelims is attentiveness and good judgment. Both come from a deep and intelligent preparation. Refer to some good guide like Unique or Spectrum. Make sure that you start solving previous years' papers as soon as you start you preparation. Due to negative marking you have to be very judicious before attempting your questions. Even now some kind of intelligent guess should work, but dont touch any question about which you are sure you dont know anything. This habit can be developed only after exercising with as many practice tests as possible.

It is not absolutely compulsory to join a coaching institute. But joining a coaching can certainly increase you chances provided its a good one. Coaching gives the direction to study, in the end its your own hard work which matters. There are people who have cracked this exam without coaching as well, but for that you need to have guidance from somewhere, it may be your parents, your friends, your teachers or some magazine also.

the best way to manage time is to keep asking yourself before doing anything that whatever you are about to do is in what ways helpful for your IAS preparation. IAS needs single minded dedication. Get rid of all the distractions to whatever extent possible. If you are married or having some companion without marriage, make sure he/she understands what you fighting for, plays the role of the support during your preparation. Wake up as early as possible and go to bed in time. A sleep of 5 to 6 hours is what you should aim for, and believe this is the time when you very astutely make a time table and stick to it. Discipline is the key to success in IAS like so many important human endeavors.

The state questions will be very pointed. Infact you have to prepare down till the minutest details of your hometown in Gujarat. about the state any thing which has made national news is important but about your home town in state remember everything, its history, geography and the contribution it makes to nation in form of resources or personalities

in fact this is more than enough time. the best thing will be to start exploring your strengths and weaknesses from now only. Dont go for any full fledged preparation as of now or you will exhaust yourself by the time exam comes after three years. Just start developing your interest in Current Affairs and start indulging in meaningful discussions about them with your friends.

Most importantly start working on your English, its very necessary. Most of the best newpapers and text books are available only in English. Secondly do join some good coaching institute if you can afford, if not then follow the guidance given in Civil Services Chronicles magazine regularly. And yes dont forget to regularly visit www.go4ias.com

First start reading a good national newspaper daily. You can read either the Hindu or the Times of India. Make it a habit to listen to the news everyday. Always try to know more about other states and their cultures in the country. If you are interested in IAS then choose the subjects you are good at and work very hard in your graduation. Prepare for the exam simultaneously and keep in the touch with the gang.
