If third generation (3G) is the next big opportunity for domestic telecom operators, it is also expected to open a whole new business stream for IT companies.3G integrates voice, data and video on a single platform which in turn allows video downloads and other applications that require high-speed connectivity.IT industry trackers believe that 3G will see a slew of orders for IT companies in key areas like integration with various operational systems and linking to them to internal networks.“With the advent of 3G, there will be large use of data services on both voice and video. IT infrastructure like data centers will play an important role,” said Gartner principal research analyst Nareshchandra Singh. This will provide opportunities for IT vendors, as telcos will want to outsource their data centre management. Managed services and platform solutions are the two major areas of 3G deliverables for IT players.Vendors including IBM, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra that already provide end-to-end IT services to telcos are expected to be major beneficiaries of this. “IBM has a service delivery platform to efficiently launch these new 3G/data services and link them to underlying network capabilities,” said IBM VP communications (growth markets) Tim Greisinger. It has also built capabilities to integrate mobile internet services with existing operational systems of the telecom operators including billing, provisioning and CRM. The 3G and broadband opportunities in the Indian telecom space has also attracted IT players like Patni Computer Systems, which have been providing 3G related services to global telecom operators.“We have technological frameworks built for 3G and broadband services to provide services in areas of service fulfillment, revenue assurance, and billing,” said Patni Computers VP Siddhartha Kataki. While the exact size of 3G opportunity for IT vendors is still not clear since it largely depends upon the scope and the approach taken by service providers, Kataki says that it could be at least 10 per cent of the total proposed capital expenditure by telecom operators.Motilal Oswal, in a recent report, has estimated that a large player like Reliance Communications’ 3G capex (including spectrum and rollout) will be Rs 7,000 crore. IBM expects the contract size to be large depending on the telecom provider.“Contract sizes range from tens of thousands of US dollars to multiple millions depending on the scope of decisions as well as the extent to which the service provider relies upon and shares risks,” said Greisinger.
Nokia’s Chennai factory is now the Finnish giant’s largest cellphone manufacturing facility by volume in the world, edging past China.China has two factories while Chennai has one. Nokia’s Chennai plant has now gone past the larger of the two Chinese factories, which till date was the company’s largest in the world. While the company refuses to divulge the annual capacity at its Chennai factory, a senior member of its global planning team said the unit is now indeed its largest manufacturing facility. Unofficial reports suggest Chennai manufactures over 100 million phones every year.Interestingly, women make up over 70% of the 8,000-strong employee pool at the Chennai plant and are involved in a mix of running productions lines, maintenance and assembly & testing operations.Nokia operates nine state-of-the-art mobile phone manufacturing units in India, Finland, China, Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Romania and Hungary.“The Chennai factory is the largest in Nokia’s global ecosystem, although the dynamics in terms of product line vary in each market. But the international markets that we serve out of Chennai have seen the largest growth in terms of volume. At present, Nokia ships GSM phones from the Chennai factory to over 50 markets spanning South-East Asia-Pacific (including Australia), India, the Middle East and Africa,” said the senior official who did not wish to be named.

Flowing, elaborate, layered and slinky Western dresses scored over the India sari or salwar kameez for most Bollywood actresses at the green carpet of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards here. While only Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra among the A-listers stuck to the graceful six-yard drape, most others like Bipasha Basu, Kangana Ranaut, Mughda Godse, Genelia D'Souza, Sushmita Sen, Diya Mirza, Amrita Rao and others proudly showed off their curves in body hugging Western attires."A sari for me is just six yards of beautiful draping. I love sari and I was feeling very 'desi' (Indian) tonight, so I decided to wear a sari. I think it flatters a woman's body the best," said Priyanka, who flaunted a striking beige and pink Manish Malhotra creation.Aishwarya wore a mint coloured, subdued, yet heavily embellished creation by designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla and looked extremely eye-catching walking in toe with husband Abhishek Bachchan.Bipasha, Kangana and Sushmita were the best dressed among those who opted for the Western silhouette. While Bipasha wore an electric blue dress by Delhi-based designer sisters Gauri and Nainika Karan, Kangana wore a pristine white wedding dress-like attire by Rick Roy. Sushmita, looked fit and slender in a slim, long Roberto Cavalli number."My dress weighs 25 kg. It is a very fairytale like dress and I always wanted one like this. But the weight doesn't matter. For girls, as long as they look good, they don't mind anything," said Kangana, who walked away with the an IIFA award for her performance in Madhur Bhandarkar's "Fashion".Star wives Suzanne Roshan and Mallika Khan (Zayed Khan's wife) too walked the green carpet wearing exquisite gowns. The men gave the women a neck-to-neck competition on the fashion quotient. The bow-tie look seemed very much like the flavour of the season with Abhishek Bachchan and Arjun Rampal flaunting the same.Hrithik Roshan, who was named the IIFA style icon of the year, ended up making a major fashion faux pas by wearing silver formal shoes for the ceremony, where he was also named the best actor in a leading role for "Jodhaa Akbar".

The State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, has lowered interest rates across the board by 25 basis points for deposits below Rs.1 crore, in what is seen as a precursor for rate cuts for the corporate sector. For deposits for 15-45 days, the interest rate has been lowered to three percent, while for between eight and 10 years, it stands at eight percent, the state-run commercial bank announced Saturday. The new rates take effect Monday. The bank has also cut the interest rate for deposits of Rs.1 crore and above, but only for longer maturity. While for 271 days to one year, the rate stands revised from five percent at 4.5 percent, and that for above one year has been cut to five percent from 5.5 percent. The announcement comes after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee nudged commercial banks to cut interest rates, saying it was necessary for the corporate sector to get credit at affordable prices to push India's overall economic growth.
